HISTORY. Shave ice has its origin in the Asian culture. Japanese immigrants brought it to Hawaii when they came to work on sugar cane plantations. To cool off while working, they would use their tools to shave ice from large ice blocks, and top it with local fruit juices. After leaving work on the plantations, many opened general stores of their own and continued to offer shave ice there. While the product does resemble a snow cone, snow cones are made with crushed ice, whereas, shave ice is made with exactly that ... shaved ice. Drizzled with syrup from every color of the rainbow, it's sure to please on a hot, Maui day!
